Smart people drive Smart cars

Finally it is going to happen. The inevitable. A new realistic idea that is affordable and yet safe... we will be able to combat high gas prices. I still believe that there is a better way to consume travel but I am finally seeing a step in the right direction. Introducing Smart cars in the USA. The president of DyamlerChrysler is going to mass produce Smart Cars in the USA and they will hit the roads starting in Q1 of 2008. The cost is for under $15,000 and the gas mileage a whopping 60 to 80 miles to the gallon. This means that you will be able to drive 600 miles on one tank of gas. Now lets do some math.
my '93 Chevy S10 gets 22 m/g which is really good. I only use my small truck for in town driving. But even at that I am driving 12,000 miles a year.
Today gas cost $2.66/gallon that means I can drive 22 miles for $2.66 in my truck or roughly $0.121/mile in my truck.
Now the smart car gets 60 - 80 m/g so if your smart car go 60m/g you would be able to drive for $0.044/mile.
now lets go back to the cost of gas for my truck per year = $1452
if I got a smart car and drove 12,000 it would cost me $532 in gas money to drive.

WOW that is $920 a year

If I sold my truck for $1000 and bought a smart car for $15000 put my $1000 from the truck and another $2000 down I could finance the smart car for $12000.
$12,000 @ 5% interest for 5 years = $226.45/mon = $2717.4/year

If i subtracted the cost / year for the car ($2717.40) minus the savings in gas ($920/year) I could get a new economical, extremely easy to part, safe car for $1797/year for 5 years.
Also take into account that my driving mileage is probably higher than 12,000, and the car will sell for less than $15,000, and the biggest change would be that gas prices are only going to get higher. I wouldn't be suprised if by the 5th year the cost of the smart car for me would only be $1500.

All I need to do now is talk my wife into it. Hopefully my truck breaks down aroung Jan 2008.

Session 2, Bitlocker Drive Encryption

Bitlocker Drive Encryption
Bitlocker for Vista will encrypt the partition that the OS resides on so put all your data on that partition if you want it to be encrypted.
Bitlocker for Longhorn (windows server 2007) will allow encryption of multiple partitions.

This provides for pre OS protection so if hackers get ahold of your encrypted drive it won't boot because they don't have the certificates.
The certificates are stored in TPM 1.2 hardware on the mother board, you can also store them on a USB key, use a PIN to boot, or password protect the certs, or store them in AD)
using bitprotected does cause a hit in performance (10%)
group policy support, scriptiable interface
if you want to decomission the HD, just destroy the cerficates (this is probably hippa comliant)
The Boot files are not encrypted and have to reside on a different partition than the OS files.

With Vista on a domain you can send the commands from a server to a client to take ownership of bitprotector on the client, turn on bitprotector, and set a PIN #

you don't have to use TPM but it is recommended

Tech ed session 1

Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 beta
In SP1 MS will start to utilize the new virtualization hardware technology from Intel and AMD.

In the new Windows Virtualization Server to be out in '06 or '07
-MS will have VSS support for snap shots of active virtual HD
-They will also allow dynamic hardware allocation( add and remove CPUs, RAM, Hard Drives, & NICs) w/o having to restart the virtual server.

Boston Tech Ed

Ryan and I left at 7am and made it to Boston Sunday evening. It was a long day of planes, trains, and busses. So far Tech Ed has surpassed my expectations. I set out to learn and understand some of the future products that M$ is going to use.
ISA 2006
EXCHANGE 2007
OFFICE 2007
Virtual Server
Vista
I have gone to sessions on almost all of those things, except ISA 2006. Vista seems to be the most promising. I hope to upload small blogs (my notes) on each session. Vista has some sweet reliability features. It also will allow me to directly ask for an invite without going through SMS which will same a lot of time. I will comment on this later in some of my notes on the sessions.

New York

Last Wednesday morning we got a call from Beth's mom that her Grandpa died. Thank you to all that have sent their condolenses. So we set out to New York that night. Treking 1200 miles, 6 states, one way to Clymer NY. Clymer is upstate NY which is no where near NYcity but close to the great lakes. It was spring there so when I ran in the morning it was around 60 degrees and misting or ranning. They live in Amish country which is kind of fun. Hence the picture of the Amish crossing sign. One time when we were visiting I raced two different Amish buggies on foot. Posted by Picasa
