Smart people drive Smart cars

Finally it is going to happen. The inevitable. A new realistic idea that is affordable and yet safe... we will be able to combat high gas prices. I still believe that there is a better way to consume travel but I am finally seeing a step in the right direction. Introducing Smart cars in the USA. The president of DyamlerChrysler is going to mass produce Smart Cars in the USA and they will hit the roads starting in Q1 of 2008. The cost is for under $15,000 and the gas mileage a whopping 60 to 80 miles to the gallon. This means that you will be able to drive 600 miles on one tank of gas. Now lets do some math.
my '93 Chevy S10 gets 22 m/g which is really good. I only use my small truck for in town driving. But even at that I am driving 12,000 miles a year.
Today gas cost $2.66/gallon that means I can drive 22 miles for $2.66 in my truck or roughly $0.121/mile in my truck.
Now the smart car gets 60 - 80 m/g so if your smart car go 60m/g you would be able to drive for $0.044/mile.
now lets go back to the cost of gas for my truck per year = $1452
if I got a smart car and drove 12,000 it would cost me $532 in gas money to drive.

WOW that is $920 a year

If I sold my truck for $1000 and bought a smart car for $15000 put my $1000 from the truck and another $2000 down I could finance the smart car for $12000.
$12,000 @ 5% interest for 5 years = $226.45/mon = $2717.4/year

If i subtracted the cost / year for the car ($2717.40) minus the savings in gas ($920/year) I could get a new economical, extremely easy to part, safe car for $1797/year for 5 years.
Also take into account that my driving mileage is probably higher than 12,000, and the car will sell for less than $15,000, and the biggest change would be that gas prices are only going to get higher. I wouldn't be suprised if by the 5th year the cost of the smart car for me would only be $1500.

All I need to do now is talk my wife into it. Hopefully my truck breaks down aroung Jan 2008.
